Distance: 75km  |  Elevation: 1,484m

This route takes you from the charming market town of Settle, through picturesque villages, and past remarkable natural landmarks like Malham Cove and Malham Tarn. Experience the beauty of the Dales with challenging climbs, exhilarating descents, and well-deserved stops for coffee and local brews.

First Loop

Kick off your cycling adventure by ascending from Settle. Follow a narrow lane that winds through gentle hills adorned with charming stone structures.

As you crest the hill beyond Little Stainforth, a large quarry comes into view—an interesting sight that showcases the area's history.

Take a left and begin your descent toward Austwick, passing the village of Clapham. You’ll navigate an underpass to cross the A65. Continue on to Clapham Station, and once under the railway bridge, take the left turn marked for Settle and the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway.

Now on the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, you’ll enjoy rolling hills that make for a pleasant ride. Keep your camera handy for the picturesque vistas of the Dales.

Settle to Arncliffe (via Malham Cove)

The second ascent from Settle offers a different kind of challenge. Prepare for a steep climb up Albert Hill and High Hill Lane, averaging around 12% over a kilometre. After leaving the town and heading into the moorland, the incline levels out briefly before rising again at a gentler 6-7%.

After a thrilling descent into Kirkby Malham, you'll arrive in Malham, ready to tackle the stunning Cove Road, with views of Malham Cove. Once you reach the summit, enjoy approximately 7 to 8 kilometres of undulating terrain around Malham Tarn, a stunning lake formed by glacial activity—a truly breathtaking landscape.

A steep 9% descent will lead you into Arncliffe village.

Beer Stop: In Arncliffe, consider stopping at The Falcon Inn for a refreshing pint and a chance to relax before the final stretch.

Arncliffe to Settle (via Fountains Fell)

Set off through the picturesque Littondale, where the road gently ascends like a friendly reminder that you’ve got some work to do. With the River Skifare bubbling away on your left and lush fields on your right, you might find yourself wondering if you’ve accidentally pedaled into a postcard.

Upon reaching Halton Gill, prepare for a climb of about 1.5 kilometers at a 7% gradient to conquer Fountains Fell/Dales Head. Enjoy the ride along the ridge, where descents and climbs alternate like a roller coaster and the impressive Pen-y-ghent is visible to your right.

After that heart-pumping adventure, enjoy a swift downhill section, glide into Stainforth, where a well-deserved break awaits before continuing your journey back to Settle!

Last Coffee Stop: Before wrapping up your journey grab a coffee at the lovely Ye Olde Naked Man Café.
